I'm Happy You're My Dad

I feel safe when you are with me;
You show me fun things to do;
You make my life much better;
The best father I know is you.

And so I want to say
I love you, Dad, and wish you
A Happy Father's Day!

older dad and grown son
The following Father's Day poem is dad poetry for a card or e-card or with a gift.

Life Lessons

You may have thought I didn't see,
Or that I hadn't heard,
Life lessons that you taught to me,
But I got every word.

Perhaps you thought I missed it all,
And that we'd grow apart,
But Dad, I picked up everything,
It's written on my heart.

Without you, Dad, I wouldn't be
The person I am today;
You built a strong foundation
No one can take away.

I've grown up with your values,
And I'm very glad I did;
So here's to you, dear father,
From your forever grateful kid.

This Father's Day poem, in free verse, tells Dad what makes him special. It's a poem about father that conveys a special father message.

I Want to Be Just Like You

In a time when fathers are totally absent,
gone most of the time,
or physically present but mentally distracted,
you are there for me—
looking at me, listening to me
understanding me, talking with me.
You make time for me
even when it's inconvenient for you.
You make me feel important to you.

I learn from you when you teach me,
when I watch you do things,
and when I observe you
just being you—a terrific father.

Every affectionate smile you give me,
every pat on the back, every hug
shows me you love me,
that you're proud of me.

These are things I'll remember
to do for my own kids.
You're a great role model, Dad.
I want to be just like you.

father and kids on walk

The essence of the FATHER'S role
Is to mirror God's own heart
And to value instruction in God's ways
With the grace that God imparts

Every father needs God's wisdom
To carry out his role
As the tower of strength and support,
For each fragile heart he holds

And there's no greater reward in life
For a father to take his place
And uphold the values of the Lord
With integrity and grace.

************************************************************

Fathers are wonderful people,
Too little understood,
We do not sing their praises
As often as we should.

A father struggles every day
To live up to his image
As protector and provider
The hero of the scrimmage.

Perhaps that is the reason
We sometimes get the notion
That fathers are not subject
To the thing we call emotion.

If you look inside a father's heart,
Where no one else can see,
You'll find he's sentimental
And soft as he can be.

Fathers are just wonderful
In a million different ways,
They merit loving compliments
And accolades of praise.

The only reason Dad aspires
To fortune and success
Is to make his family proud of him
And bring them happiness.

Just like our heavenly Father,
He's a guardian and a guide,
The person we can count on
To always take our side.

************************************************************

Be kind to thy father,
for when thou were young,
Who loved thee so fondly as he?
He caught the first accents that
fell from thy tongue,
And joined in thy innocent glee.

************************************************************

There in every memory
See his love and care
Strength and hands to count on
Freely he does share
Provider, toil so faithfully
To make our dreams come true
Give strong and tender discipline
Though it is hard to do
A Father is God's chosen one
To lead the family
And point it to His will for life
Of love and harmony...

************************************************************

My father is a Christian;
He leads our household well;
With instruction from the Bible,
Right behavior he'll compel.

Yet he steers us with compassion;
His gentle love is true;
He conforms to our Lord Jesus,
So we know just what to do.
He teaches us with purpose,
Guides us in all Godly ways,
So we will take the right path,
And serve our Lord with praise.

I'm glad you're a Christian, Dad;
You help me see things clearly.
I'll always look up to you,

And love you very dearly.

My Daddy Is The Greatest

My daddy is the greatest;
The best dad there ever was.
He always brings me lots of joy;
He's my very own Santa Claus.

My daddy can do anything;
He's smart as smart can be.
I love to walk and hold his hand
To show he belongs to me.

I love my daddy!

My Father, My Guiding Light

Dad, you're like the sun to me,
a sure thing, always there,
beaming light and warmth on my life.
Whatever is good in me today,
I owe to your wisdom, your patience,
your strength, your love.
You taught me by example,
as a role model,
how to be my own person,
how to believe in myself,
instructing me without controlling me.
Even when we disagreed,
you held us together,
so our bond was never broken.
I understand what you did for me,
and I am so grateful that I have you
as my solid foundation, my rock.
I respect you, I admire you, I love you,
my guiding light, my father.

By Joanna Fuchs

Is my anchor in any storm.

You’re a great dad in every way.
I wish you every happiness.
Happy Father’s Day.

This father poem is a message to a father that will touch his heart as a Fathers Day poem. It's a rhyming poem.

Important Dad

Dad, when I fell and skinned my knee,
You chased away my tears;
If things were hard in school for me,
You helped me through my fears.

When I was old enough to drive a car,
You patiently taught me how;
Your loving care was my guiding star;
You cared then, and you still care now.

So on Father's Day I'll say a prayer,
To thank the Lord that you were there.

By Karl and Joanna Fuchs

Father poems contain a variety of messages, but this father poem in free verse was written for a pre-teen or teen to give to his or her father. It has in mind all the fathers who have jobs--fathers who leave each workday morning and return, dependably, each night. These words for father convey a special father message.

A Real Father

It's not so common anymore
to have a dad who's really there,
who is the provider for his family,
who comes home every night,
whose predictability
creates a sense of stability and security
in his household.
Your routine may not seem valuable to you,
but it's worth a lot to me.
I'm thankful that I can depend on you
to always be you--
a real father,
responsible, trustworthy,
and a great role model.
I've learned a lot of good things
from watching you.
Thanks, Dad.

Father poems send important messages in father poetry, often used as verses for cards. Here's a free dad poem that tells how much influence fathers can have. You could use this father poem as a Father's Day poem. This message to father is a gift in itself.

If Everyone Had a Father Like You

If everyone had a father
Who was more like you,
There'd be more laughing, joy and singing;
Fewer people would be blue.

There'd be much more understanding;
Crime and hate could not prevail.
We'd all be so contented,
We wouldn't need a jail.

If everyone had a father
Who was more like you,
The whole world would be blessed,
Just as I am blessed with you.

By Karl Fuchs

Kids often hope to be like their parents or to have certain good qualities their parents have. This poem lionizes dad, and expresses the wish to be like him.

Super Dad

I studied and watched you when I was a kid.
I knew you were special in all that you did.
You handled the problems that came, day by day;
Your brilliance came out in what you would say.

It defied understanding, I thought, every night,
Till one day I saw, and was amazed by the sight.
I finally knew what I was missing before:
You were hanging your cape on a hidden door.

You’re the very best man I ever knew;
I hope to be a super person like you.

By Karl and Joanna Fuchs

Peerless Dad

I am your child; you are my dad;
I really appreciate the times we've had.
I feel a bit sad for others I see,
Who don't have a wonderful father, like me.

For me you are perfect; you're wise and you're strong;
You loved me and taught me what's right and what's wrong.
For those reasons I love you, and to you I confide,
I want to be a parent who fills you with pride.

Happy Father's Day, Dad, just one day of the year,
But I'm happy to tell you, you haven't a peer.

This Father's Day poem starts at the beginning and recounts what Dad did right as a parent.

Father's Day Thank You

Dad,
The adventure of life
that made mother your wife
proved how wise you can be.

Your decision was great;
you chose a great mate,
and started our family tree.

When I came along,
life was easy, a song;
I was happy, and you were the key.

So on Father's Day,
I just want to say,
thank you for fathering me!

Everything Dad

A little girl needs her daddy
To love her with manly charm,
To soothe her when she's hurt,
And keep her safe from harm.

A girl needs her dad
To show her a man who's good,
To help her make right choices,
As only a father could.

A woman needs her father
Just to be aware,
He'll always be there for her
To sustain her and to care.

You've been all these things, Dad.
I hope that you can see
How much I treasure you;
You mean everything to me.

It's my father.

The man I'll respect till I die,
Who taught me always to try,
It's my father.

He was never too busy for me;
He's my ideal man, totally.
My father!

Who listens and understands,
Who teaches me and sets fair rules
Without unfair demands.

There's a new and different stage;
This little person changes a lot
With each fascinating age.

Being a dad takes all you've got;
Your heart and mind you'll invest;
It's the hardest job you'll ever have,
And the one you'll love the best.

Father's Day Song

As I've said elsewhere, the melodies for most familiar Protestant hymns are in the public domain, so I looked again to a Protestant hymnal for the melody for a song about father. This Father's Day song has the essential ingredients for a good father message—love, respect, admiration—that should be included in a song for dad. You can use it for a fathers day card poem, too, since it's a Father's Day poem and song. The melody, written in 1792 by Oliver Holden, is from the familiar hymn, “All Hail the Power of Jesus Name.” Note that there are two melodies with the same lyric, so be sure to look for the one written by Oliver Holden. As always, check for copyrights on recent additions to the original music, and if they exist, just don't use the additions; use the original melody. As is, this melody is not easy enough for little kids, so feel free to change a few notes to make it easier.

Essential Father

My dad is my role model for
Most everything I do.
I look to him to see what's right
He always gets me through.
(Repeat last two lines)

I hope my father knows how much
I love him and I care.
He is my hero and my rock,
My dad is always there.
(Repeat last two lines)

My father is essential to
My life and happiness.
My feelings are so strong for him,
My heart cannot express.
(Repeat last two lines)

There's so much more about my dad
That I would like to say,
But now I'll end by saying to you Dad,
Happy Father's Day.
(Repeat last two lines)
